Advent 2017: Week 1

advent1Advent is a season of joyful anticipation of the Kingdom and of preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus. To do both is not easy; Christmas preparation can overwhelm us.

As we realise how much we need God, we can more fully rejoice in the knowledge that Jesus has already come to redeem. We can long for the fullness of God's kingdom all the more as we recognize that God has already begun fulfilling the promises made to our ancestors. We can appreciate the many ways God's life touches our lives each day

Congratulations to Debate Team

 team

A huge congratulations to the Cardinal Newman debate team who were runners up in the Pixl Up for Debate National Championships. It is a wonderful achievement to be second out of over 120 schools in England and Wales!

The competition took place on Thursday 6th July in the prestigious Harrow School, near London. After an early start, the whole debate club, accompanied by Mr O'Sullivan, Mr Castle and Mrs Nickolls, arrived at Harrow with enough time for a quick tour around its oldest classroom.

This was the room in which the famous 'wingardium leviosa' scene from Harry Potter was filmed and is steeped in history. The whole room is adorned with the names of past pupils etched into the wood.

Following the tour and a quick briefing, the team had to debate on the topics of national service, the monarchy and funding for the arts. Despite fierce competition, and after a wait which would put the X Factor to shame, we found out that Amelia, Tom and Melanie had made it to the finals!

They had won all three rounds leading up to this point and now had the opportunity to follow former prime ministers and great orators of the past by speaking in Harrow's Speech Room, built in 1871 for the students of Harrow to enable them to practise their public speaking.

Even though it was certainly a daunting experience for both Cardinal Newman's team and our opposition from Hinchingbrooke School in Cambridgeshire, both teams put on a passionate, articulate debate. The motion was 'This house proposes that rich countries should give a lot more in foreign aide to poorer countries.' The competition was, inevitably, close and, in the end, the opposition, Hinchingbrooke, won by a narrow margin. Whoever would have thought, though, that our little school in RCT could come runners up in a national debating competition? We are so proud of the whole team who have worked together to plan, prepare and polish fantastic arguments, and in particular of Amelia, Tom and Mel who were outstanding on the day. In addition to this exciting team win, we would also like to congratulate Melanie and Tom on being awarded individual prizes for being two of the the top five speakers on the day.

We now look forward to the Welsh Schools National Debating Championships in the autumn term and hope to continue with the same success.

If a student or member of staff wishes to find out more about debating, please come along to our debate taster session at 3.15-4.15 on Thursday. We will meet in the library.
